Trying to convince myself i am allowed to take up space is like writing with my left hand when i was born to use my right In the poem titled "the idea of shrinking is hereditary" she struggles to realize her own self-worth: These acts of almost casual abuse teach the poet that women are not allowed to have voices unless granted by others. ![]() In childhood the poet witnesses her father "shov the word hush/ between her lips" and shaming her into silence when she tries to speak at the dinner table. One of Kaur's overarching themes is the act of silencing women, which furthers a woman's sense of otherness. This confusion is directed both toward understanding her place in the world as an individual and her relationships with others. Her trauma related to alcoholic family members, abuse and rape shape the poet's fraught psyche, leaving a sense of insecurity and confusion that permeates every page. ![]() In the section "the hurting," Kaur explores the idea of otherness within oneself, how one cannot be at home in one's own body and how so many experiences affirm that to be a woman is undesirable and alien. ![]() Kaur divides the work into four sections-hurting, loving, breaking, and healing-that mirror the poet's growth. Rupi Kaur's milk and honey is a collection of prose and poetry that explores themes of silence, abuse, womanhood, family, connections and personal power. ![]() ![]() ![]() “Amusing descriptions, madcap excursions, and narrow escapes from danger.” - Kirkus Reviews With approximately twenty pieces of full color full-page artwork, as well as spot illustrations, and deft, literary writing, Nicholas Gannon once again creates a fully realized world and a story to sink into and explore. I was really pleased when I learned the author would be returning to that world – now entitled Festive Fakes – for a follow-up story, also a romance that starts out with a fake relationship, although this time the leads are two long-time friends who have drifted apart.Īt the beginning of The Christmas Leap, Michael Davis returns home with what he thinks is the perfect Christmas tree for the home he shares with his boyfriend Jared, only to overhear a phone conversation between Jared and his sister in which he says he’s been planning to break up with Michael for months – that he should never have let their relationship go on for as long as it has, in fact – but that he’s not going to do it until after Christmas because he knows how much Michael is looking forward to it. Keira Andrews’ The Christmas Deal from 2019 is a sweet, sexy fake-relationship story with engaging characters, lots of warm fuzzies and a well-deserved HEA I enjoyed it very much and was quick to pick it up in audio the following year. I can take or leave Christmas-themed romances but I do pick up a few each year, especially if they’re by favourite authors. ![]() ![]() ![]() Where was the Trojan Horse that I had heard about before ever reading the Iliad, so infused as it is in our cultural DNA? Why doesn’t Troy fall at the end of the Iliad? I later (when I read The Odyssey) saw that the ending of the War is contained there. It was odd to me when I first read the Iliad, though that we have a war that lasts 10 years, the Iliad only covers a short period in the ninth year of the war. ![]() The Trojan War, standalone, is eternally popular, with even an early Doctor Who episode taking a crack at it, as does Shakespeare. Now in Troy, Stephen Fry caps it off by looking at the Trojan War. It’s a complicated nest of relationships, characters, and events that still puts things like the Marvel Cinematic Universe to shame, and Fry ably brings it all together, if anyone can, in the previous two books. The first two volumes of the Mythos project by Stephen Fry looked at the foundational myths of Greek Myths, from creation all the way through the Olympians, through the elder cycle of heroes and demigods, and then to the succeeding generations of demigods and heroes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Please be aware that the delivery time frame may vary according to the area of delivery and due to various reasons, the delivery may take longer than the original estimated timeframe. Kimi’s mom is a painter who sacrificed for years before she was finally able to turn her full attention to painting. Consequently, Kimi has never met her maternal grandparents. However, Kimi’s mother defied her own parents when she married someone who was born in America as opposed to someone born in Japan. Kimi knows her father’s family and has heard their stories about internment during WWII and other challenges they faced. The set up is that Kimi’s mom was born in Japan, and Kimi’s father is a fourth-generation Japanese American. If this was the book’s goal, it has succeeded. Kimi is a likeable and engaging heroine, everything is gorgeous, and now I’m hungry and want to go to Japan. In the process she connects with her Japanese grandparents, meets A BOY, sees cool stuff, makes things, and eats fantastic food. In this book, Kimi, a Japanese-American high school senior, visits Japan to Find Herself. I Love You So Mochi is an adorable YA with a romance in it, although it’s more of a coming of age story than a romance novel. ![]() |
